HIV/AIDS: A Curse to the 21st century

Top

One of the most widespread and potent diseases in today’s world is HIV AIDS, whose presence is known to pretty much everyone. Discovered just a few decades ago, it has already taken a toll on the lives of millions of people worldwide.

HIV – Human Immuno Deficiency Virus and AIDS – Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome are words the modern generation is possibly most afraid of. Owing to its nature, it comes as no surprise that the virus and its resultant disease have become a taboo subject and not talked about very openly by many.

Several myths and superstitions haunt this disease, which, given the debilitating nature of the disease, is understandable. The disease has been demonized and in their attempts to brush it under the rug, people have only ended up adding to the scary element.

People often discriminate against its victims, ceasing to offer even a handshake to them. Sad as this may be, the terrible stories of discrimination are nevertheless very true! Yet, our minds know, HIV doesn’t spread through regular day to day contact, or through many other myths which we often practice. However, it does spread through sexual contact, contaminated needles, barber’s equipment, transfusion of infected blood, from parent to offspring and many more genuine and unfortunately often inescapable methods of infection.

The futility of the situation arises from the fact that even with awareness regarding the virus, people cannot entirely cut off sexual relations, medical procedures or even hair cuts for that matter and these mundane, day to day activities can hold the potential of destroying their health forever.

The presence of HIV/AIDS can easily be detected by a blood test. With the passage of time, fortunately several varieties of drugs have surfaced to combat HIV and its associated infections and cancers. Such medicines often sell under the name of RT Inhibitors, Protease Inhibitors, Fusion Inhibitors and more.

Unfortunately, medical science has its short comings as well and side effects of these drugs can often be severe-ranging from inflammation of pancreas to painful nerve damage.

Investigative Journalism and RTI: A Strong Bond

Top

The Right to Information Act (RTI) was passed by the Indian government in 2005. This led to India Today urging its correspondents across the country to use this act and bring probable offenders in the public?s view. A spate of investigative stories by India Today?s associate editor Shyamlal Yadav followed.

One investigative story which caught my attention and was instantly gobbled up by the Indian media was Babus? Flight of Fantasy by Yadav on the 5th of September 2008. Post Prime Minister Manmohan Singh?s order to the cabinet ministers asking them to curtail expenses of air travel and undertake foreign trips only when deemed “absolutely necessary”, Yadav followed it up with an investigation using the RTI as the weapon to obtain details.

Investigative Journalism and RTI: A Strong Bond

Post Prime Minister Manmohan Singh?s order to the cabinet ministers asking them to curtail expenses of air travel and undertake foreign trips only when deemed “absolutely necessary”, Yadav followed it up with an investigation using the RTI as the weapon to obtain details.

The story is replete with statistics and gets boring after a point of time. However, this vital information was the front page headlines of leading dailies. The fact that the RTI has been used so cleverly to reveal data which is vital to bring about loopholes in the amount of money used by cabinet ministers for their foreign travel is a jolt for investigative journalism. The money involved here is the public?s money so the target audience is vast; in fact it is the whole of India.

RTI can be used by journalists in the right manner to unearth information. The process is speedy and is not time-consuming. Also it adheres to the ethics of journalism and facilitates in reinforcing the importance of research in investigative reporting. Without being overly optimistic one can safely say that, if used properly, the RTI can usher in a new change in journalism. The report is a beacon of hope for aspiring investigative journalists who don?t want to sting the readers (pun intended) with shoddy reporting. RTI is the way to go!

P.S: Shyamlal Yadav was awarded Ramnath Goenka Award Indian Express Award for Excellence in journalism (Investigative Reporting category) in 2009.

iPhone 4: A clear winner!

Top

Good job Apple, take a bow

Apples iconic iPhone gets a huge facelift and it is very evident and the flaws seem far and few in between. Has Apple managed to address all the evident flaws in the earlier generation iPhones (3G and 3GS) with iPhone 4? Or is it just another simple yet magnificent beautification of a mass hysteria creating product? Read and figure out for yourself.

Cosmetic Alteration/Aesthetics

Steve Jobs mentioned in his WWDC keynote that the latest iteration in the iPhone series resembles a beautiful old Leica camera. He was spot on with the description.

A major upheaval occurs in the design area. iPhone 4 is a stark contrast to the rounded back design of the 3G and the 3GS. The only curves you see are at the four edges.

The phone is noticeably leaner, but the weight has been maintained. It is definitely going to take time getting used to this design but it won?t be long before you start jabbering to your friends about the feel of the perfect finish of the phone on your palms. It just feels right and to add to it it is a beauty.

The real deal/What is inside?

They say the real beauty is one that is inside. Well it is true in the case of iPhone 4 as well.

The installation of Apples proprietary A4 chip on the iPhone, an upgrade from Samsungs ARM Cortex-A8-based CPU on the 3GS makes iPhone 4 much faster than its predecessor.

Add to that 512MB of ram, double the amount on the 3GS, makes the iPhone more capable with the multitasking features and gives better boost to the improved graphic quality of apps for iOS4.

The phone is available in 16GB and 32GB variants.

Dream screen

The 3.5 inch screen on the iPhone4 is called the ?retina display? and it definitely is a true reflection of your eyes!

Biologics

Top

Biologics can be defined as therapeutic products that are produced by a living system or organism. These include a wide range of products ranging from vaccines, allergenics, products derived from blood and plasma, gene and cell therapy.

Unlike conventional drugs of which structures are known, biologics are complex macromolecules that cannot be easily identified or characterized. In addition, biologics need special attention during their manufacturing process, in contrast to small molecules, since these products are temperature sensitive and are highly prone to microbial contamination.

FDAs Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) regulates biologics meant for human use under applicable federal laws, such as the Public Health Service (PHS) Act. However, because most biological products also meet the definition of “drugs” under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act, they are also subject to regulations under the FD&C Act.

The approval process for biologics under the PHS Act is similar to NDA’s approval process for human drugs. Preclinical studies are followed by different phases of clinical testing under an investigational new drug application (IND). Based on this data, biologics license application (BLA) is submitted to CBER for review and approval for marketing. The product may also be subjected to official lot release.

As part of the manufacturing process, the manufacturer is required to perform tests (assays) for validation of product safety on each lot before it is released for distribution.

The FDA takes about 13 months for approval of a biologic under standard procedures. Monitoring of safety and stability of biological products continues even after their approval. Manufacturers must report problems pertaining to the product quality to FDA’s Biological Product Deviation Reporting System.

General product related standards set by the FDA are method of testing, potency, safety (cell therapies are exempted), sterility, purity/pyrogenicity, identity, and constituent materials.

The EMEA has standard guidelines for different biologics such as monoclonal antibodies, immunotherapy for cancer, plant transgenics, viral vectors, immunoglobulins and immuno sera, cell and gene therapy, transgenic animals, and cytokines.

In Europe, approval for biotechnology derived proteins, gene transfer products, and recombinant vaccines are through the centralized procedure and it takes an average time of 210 days for their approval.

Biosimilars are follow-on biologics to innovative biopharmaceuticals. As biologics are complex macromolecules, therefore, unlike small molecules, biosimilars are not identical to the original products.
